No matter what kind of information you are looking for, you will find it on the Web.
 
To search for that information, there are three tools you can use - search engines, search directories and search agents. They differ in the way they compile their databases.
 

Search engines regularly scan the Web and retrieve information on the content of as many sites as they can find.
Google
A simple-looking automated search engine with a vast database and good response time.
Altavista
Another good search engine. AltaVista, a business of Overture Services, Inc., is a leading provider of search services and technology.
HotBot (www.hotbot.com)
Uses Yahoo, Lyco and MSN search engines filters
Lycos Asia (www.lycosasia.com)
A good search engine with a built-in directory.
WebCrawler brings users the top search results from Google, Yahoo!, Windows Live, Ask and other popular search engines. WebCrawler also provides multimedia results, including images, video, news, and local information. WebCrawler is a registered trademark of InfoSpace, Inc.

Search directories use people to search and pick the best sites on the Web.

Search agents look through other databases and usually they can search several databases at once.

How To Search

Instead of just using keywords to search for something, you can do an advanced search to get more precise results.
 
 
  • Use '+' before a word to indicate you want it to be in all the sites that the search engine finds, for example - 'sport + sepak taktraw'. This brings out all the sites listing this rattan-ball game popular in Southeast Asia.
  • Use '-' before a word to exclude it from all the sites the search engine finds, for example - 'Napoleon -drinks'. All sites relating to Napoleon Bonaparte, and not the popular drinks, will be shown.
  • Use '*' to search for sites which include a certain word regardless of its ending, for example - 'sport*' will show results that include words sports, sporting etc
  • Use quotation marks to find an exact phrase, for example "Thank God it's Friday". This will result in fewer sites but they are closely related to your chosen topic.
  • Use upper-case letters only when you are looking for a proper noun. A lower-case will find both upper and lower-case results.

Combine Search Terms
 
 
  • AND - This tells the search engine to show only sites which include both terms, for example 'cold and allergies'
  • OR - This brings up results that feature either or both the terms included.
  • NOT - This lets you search for sites which include the first term but not the second.
  • NEAR -An extension of the AND search term. Lets you specify that the terms must appear close to each other on the site, for example - "vegetarian near6 recipes' will find sites with the word vegetarian within six words of recipes.
  • Boolean Combination -Many search engines allow you to combine Boolean terms using brackets, for example -browser and (Microsoft or Firefox)' will find sites which contain either the word 'Microsoft' or the word 'Firefox' and the word 'browser'.
